I’ll be on WNYC!
So Monday was my first day at WNYC. I think it’s going to be a great fit for me. I have been able to go to several press conferences and collect sound. And over the last 2 days I’ve learned that I really need to work on my writing skills. I would like to think that I’m extremely talented and able to write the best thing anybody has ever read EVER, but currently that isn’t the case. I’ve gathered sound on South Asian construction workers who want back pay, and the LIRR working out a deal with the Teamsters and later today I’m going somewhere to find out about the Sanitation Department. Other than that, meeting everybody here at the station has been a lot of fun. And being the “kid from Alaska” hasn’t been much of an issue.
Unfortunately the weekend wasn’t all that eventful. I went out on both Friday and Saturday nights. 6 women, 1 me was an amazing ratio on Saturday night at a little bar with a great back room off of 2nd Ave. And on Monday after work there was a reception for former and current fellows. Some of those kids are really interesting. They were probably the best gauge of what I have to look for in the future. And in talking to one fellow from last year, she said the most flattering thing I have ever heard… “you’re genuine, and you’ll go far.” I had to have been blushing within 10 seconds of being told that.
Update!
I did a translation voice over for a Guatemalan day laborer and will be heard on WNYC 93.9. Check it out It will be part of a 3 part series that will either run tomorrow or friday.
