Go Go Gadget Microphone

August 14th, 2008

Tonight, part of my journey is complete. I finished putting together an audio field kit that I think could get me from one place to another without to much hassle. More or less, these are the same components I used during my internship in the WNYC newsroom. No fancy solid state recorder (even though Christmas is coming up… eventually) the MiniDisk recorder I have would have broadcast quality sound and do fine for whatever field work I would be doing. I’ll list out here what I have just in case anybody who is looking at what others have in their kits. I did a lot of looking around when I first got to New York.

  • Sony Net MD WAlkman MZ-N707
  • 6′ microphone cord
  • Electro-Voice RE50/B Microphone
  • Sony MDR-7506 Headphones
  • Moleskine notebook
  • 13″ Macbook
  • Audacity - audio editing program
  • Spunk and Moxie

I’m still debating if I want to round it out with a cheap video camera. I have a decent digital camera, but the video on it ain’t so good. I still carry these romantic dreams of crossing the country gathering sound for some grand project or show that everybody would then listen to and think about their own lives more. Maybe someday, but for now this is a really good start. Anybody got any stories they need me to cover from NYC and involve any of the things I have listed above? If not, then I’ll talk to you later…
