Filming Locations Of Movies About Alaska *Update*
I hope changing the title helps with some of the confusion. These are where these movies were FILMED not where they take place in the movie. 30 Days of Night was filmed in New Zealand, that is why there are trees in “Barrow.” In the actual city of Barrow there are very few trees if any at all.
This afternoon I decided to totally waste my life and create a map of the actual filming locations of movies about Alaska. It is a map of where films that all take part (or have large chunks) in the great state of Alaska. This all came up when my coworker Jane walked up to me and asked “Is Sitka as beautiful as it was in the movie The Proposal?” To which I could only reply… “That was filmed in Massachusetts.”
With an increased interest in the state generated by shows like Northern Exposure and Deadliest Catch, I decided to weed out most of the lies that the entertainment industry would want you to believe. I decided to try to mostly stay away from Discovery Channel shows (except for Deadliest Catch) just because those are more or less documentaries and it would be tough to fake actual things going on.
Some people are having trouble understand it, so I’ll try to explain it a little more clearly.
The titles listed are placed above the locations they were filmed, so…
Northern Exposure was shot in Washington
Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay was shot in Juneau and Glacier Bay

I don’t want people to think this was a completely original. I got the idea from Dan Meth’s series of pop culture charts. I also understand this may be incomplete, please leave updates in the comments and I’ll get to it when I feel so inclined.

Nice show… Alas I cannot think of others… though I heard of the proposal.
oh!! what about the SIMPSONS Movie!?
isaac
I thought about including the Simpsons movie, but it didn’t give an actual location in AK where it was set. I could have done an entire study on what they got super wrong though.
Crossing the border and entering a beautiful community with a lake and oil.
Taking a train back to Seattle.
Are they in Nome? No mountains there, and it is next to the ocean.
The list goes on.
30 days of night was set in Barrow (NORTH Alaska)
chronic town was set in fairbanks, ice road truckers is filmed mostly on the dalton highway, between fbks and PB. planet earth has a bunch of alaskan parts.
I’ll have to add Chronic Town in the next version, but I decided to avoid most documentaries, like Ice Road Truckers (even though the first season was set in Canada) and Planet Earth. I also left out Grizzly Man on purpose as well.
Thanks for the addition though.
and what, Mystery Alaska was filmed in Texas????
Mystery, AK was filmed in Alberta.
You forgot “On deadly Ground” filmed in Valdez. and Insomia which had a few exterior shots flimed on Thompson pass – and actually filmed in South east
oh.. 30 days of night was not filmed at all in Alaska. The film shows Barrow with …trees
I have updated the map and title. I looked it up, and “On Deadly Ground” was mostly filmed in Washington, not Valdez. Most of these films have at least a few shots that were actually filmed in Alaska, but if the bulk of the movie was filmed elsewhere, that is where I placed the title on the map.
I hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion.
You can make fun of me for remembering this, but what about that awful TV show starring Anne Heche, “Men in Trees,” set in some fake southeast community? I’m sure that it was filmed near Seattle or Vancouver, but hey, it was supposed to be Alaska.
Also, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was filmed partially on Knik Glacier near Palmer. The scene when McCoy and Kirk escape from Rura Penthe and are walking across that vast ice field.
And don’t forget the “Star Trek: The Lords of Time” movie by the Fairbanks Area Star Trek Fan Club.
Here’s my story about two new set-in-Alaska movies.
Both indies make the festival rounds.
One shot in Wash. the other in AK.
I stumbled on them after reporting on the state government’s program to give $100 million in incentives to movie makers.
Thanks for the map project.
