Go Nooks!

I can’t express how much I love this year’s into movie for the Alaska Nanooks Hockey Team. I do look back fondly on the gross amount of time I spent in the Carlson Center watching the Nooks, but I can honestly say I’m a tad jealous that I’m not there to watch this opening intro.

I can’t tell which part is my favorite:

Where the bear cuts the icebreaker (cutter… har har) in half?
Pulls down the Top Gun shades and flys a jet?
Blows up several rival schools?
Blows up multiple volcanoes?
BLOWS UP THE ENTIRE EARTH IN SOME SORT OF SUPERNOVA
Jet enters a wormhole?
Ejects from jet inside wormhole?
Crashes into Carlson Center that is relocated from downtown to an asteroid?
Fire shot into a net causing it to BURST INTO FLAMES?

Keep up the good work Nooks, I’m going to watch Chad Johnson play for the Rangers to get my local hockey fix.

Filming Locations Of Movies About Alaska Update

I hope changing the title helps with some of the confusion. These are where these movies were FILMED not where they take place in the movie. 30 Days of Night was filmed in New Zealand, that is why there are trees in “Barrow.” In the actual city of Barrow there are very few trees if any at all.

This afternoon I decided to totally waste my life and create a map of the actual filming locations of movies about Alaska. It is a map of where films that all take part (or have large chunks) in the great state of Alaska. This all came up when my coworker Jane walked up to me and asked “Is Sitka as beautiful as it was in the movie The Proposal?” To which I could only reply… “That was filmed in Massachusetts.”

With an increased interest in the state generated by shows like Northern Exposure and Deadliest Catch, I decided to weed out most of the lies that the entertainment industry would want you to believe. I decided to try to mostly stay away from Discovery Channel shows (except for Deadliest Catch) just because those are more or less documentaries and it would be tough to fake actual things going on.

Some people are having trouble understand it, so I’ll try to explain it a little more clearly.

The titles listed are placed above the locations they were filmed, so…

Northern Exposure was shot in Washington

Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay was shot in Juneau and Glacier Bay

I don’t want people to think this was a completely original. I got the idea from Dan Meth’s series of pop culture charts. I also understand this may be incomplete, please leave updates in the comments and I’ll get to it when I feel so inclined.

I’ll never understand why people don’t look at bylaws more often. When written by people who don’t care, they can be quite amusing. Back in my days as a fresh faced youth at UAF I was very active in Student Government and Concert Board. When it came to my attention that the CB needed new bylaws, I jumped at the chance to write them, and put in the way I want things to be done. I added new positions and a very interesting way to break a tie…

010.7 Farkle- the game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Must always be best two (2) out of three (3).

You Farkle all the time according to these. I know nobody uses them, but if it came down to it… they are totally official. Enjoy the rest of them here.

The photo above is of my fellow concert board members and I on a trip to Nashville for a conference. We got a picture with Ron Jeremy and he had NO CLUE why we were all wearing mustaches.

I went to school with Lee. Although we never really knew each other during my time at UAF, he is a legend. Last time I was in town, he gave me a huge hug and called me honey while at the Pump House karaoke night. I probably blushed. This clip apparently ended up on Anderson Cooper 360… awesome. If you feel so inclined, check out some of the comments on his youtube page about the video, a ton of them are simply, “you go girl!”

It’s Been A Campaign

With Saxby winning Georgia, I felt it was finally time to take a moment and reflect on this year’s campaign surprises. Hmmmm, what could that be, oh yea… HOW DID ALASKA ACTUALLY MATTER FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER? First Palin’s nomination and then Stevens is found guilty, I did that cartoon eye wipe where it made the squeaky noises when I found out that fateful August morning.

Personal politics aside, I don’t think Palin was a bad choice, I think she was a premature choice. Stay Governor for the next 4 years and try again, she isn’t going away anytime soon. One thing I will give her credit for though is the ability to laugh at herself when the chips are down. Here is the best part of her SNL appearance and one of the writers for this actually got it right by calling it a “snowmachine” nobody up there calls it a snowmobile.

“Now You’re Dead, because I’m an animal, and I’m bigger than you,” So true.
