Tony’s Wedding

So, the wedding happened last summer, but I still think this is awesome. My friend Tony (2008 IRTS Fellow)’s wedding has been featured on Rock ‘n Roll Bride.

First up is Tony & Katie’s laid back, funky backyard wedding. Although the pair live in New York they opted to hold their wedding in Kentucky where all their family are based. They knew they didn’t want a traditional church wedding and luckily for them Katie’s grandparents allowed their home to play host to the celebrations.

You can see other photos from the wedding at the site. When I first saw them on facebook, I could instantly tell it was Tony who picked out the skinny ties. Please excuse me, I’ve got to go rewatch Mad Men again.

Subway Hero – FNR Edition

As someone who it is safe to say has a very intimate knowledge (short of seeing it happen) I was able to report on this story for Fox News Radio! I collected sound and advised an anchor before a newscast. The cherry on top was my first wrap being pushed out to stations. Some of you may remember my earlier stint as a reporter, but this time, I produced my own package, submitted a script and had it approved by the head honcho Mitch Davis. While I am very proud of this, it was a little embarrassing when Mitch said my piece was approved and I gave him a high-five without realizing it.

Courageous Tales of Brave Animals

So as my New York City adventure comes to an end, another will shortly begin. How do I get 60+ lbs worth of clothing and toys up to Alaska and then turn around and bring them back here to the city.

My plans for the next few weeks are as follows. I will return to the land of my birth and eat a sandwich. After many days of laying on various couches and under bridges I shall complete the coursework I have yet to complete to receive my degree. After that I wish to play risk against Keith, Don, Colt, Nick, and Dustin at a very public venue where we will be extremely intoxicated. (It is only for a more realistic battle) Upon my victory, I will pack up everything I think I would need in the city (a bat) and head towards my new home… a storage unit on the bad side of town.

In all seriousness though. I have had a remarkable summer. Everybody in the IRTS group and Kathy along with everybody at WNYC were excellent to me. I can honestly say I have 30 new friends who will be calling and asking for a place to say. The best part of that arrangement is I will be doing the same when I need to travel to Florida, Arizona, Utah, or a whole mess of other useless states. As for WNYC, Patricia and Jenna, without whom I would have never had the opportunity to learn from the many mistakes I used to make or the slightly fewer mistakes I make now. Brigid, my intern partner in crime was always there to point out that Steve Bushemi or Robert Novak was in the building and that we should walk the halls pretending we had something to do so we could bump into them.

Overall this experience has shown me that I do think I could make it in New York City. It is as far away from home as you can get, and that is kind of sexy. Even though this summer has existed in a state of “safe” reality (one where I can’t mess up to bad and things are provided for me) the fun part now comes to see if I will make it in the city or if I shall wither and go back to Alaska to run their public radio network till I die.

Only time will tell.

As for the blog, I will try to keep sparse posts every so often about my time in AK. And will hopefully resume it when I return to NYC.

I know your prayers are with me… I’m going to need them,

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Keeping up on this was going really well until the end of last week. Man, who knew looking for apartments would be so difficult. So I’ll recap the weekend and this week so far.
Last weekend was hilarious. Friday night, several pitchers of sangria were passed around at the Cosmic Catina and I got to hang out with a few fellows I normally don’t see. Best part though was when Sophia was actually thrown out of the bar by our waitress. It was a sight to be seen, she was wobbly and ready to pick a fight. We finally got her out of there without to many profanities being yelled. Saturday and Sunday I worked on a slideshow for our group. Over the past few weeks I had collected pictures people had taken and I used Final Cut to put them all together into a 4 min video. The music was tougher to pick out than which pictures. I’m such an obscure music snob. I ended up using Of Montreal’s Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games, Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’, and TV On The Radio’s Wolf Like Me.
So Monday I went to work and then headed over to Interep for a end of the program banquet. I arrived early and set up my computer for the slideshow. Shannon and Bowen won the two awards given during the event, which was great because I got to call Shannon “Mr. Rodgers” like 5 times. Then afterwards we all grabbed the left over wine and a group headed to a park, but I was tired and getting sick so I went home. Tuesday I was sick as hell. I couldnt go to work, so I lounged around the dorm room for the entire day, went and got medicine and went to sleep. Today is better, good enough to go to work, but not 100 percent.

And the rambling will end there, I’ll put up something more to the point either later today or tomorrow.

Alpha Rats Nest

This week has been just a little off more or less. I’m not quite sure what is up. My time here in the IRTS program is coming to an end in a week and that makes me sad. It seems like only yesterday I was spilling a whole cup of soy sauce on myself at Plump Dumpling, or ranting and raving about going to Dumpling Man. (If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love dumplings.) Everything they bragged about at the beginning of the program has come true. As a group of strangers, we are now bound by a common experience. Some had better times than others, but overall I think everybody enjoyed the experience. Now the hard part begins.

I talked to the graduation office and have until the end of August to finish my two correspondence classes which is good. Packing up all my things and getting them to New York, that is bad. Seeing all my friends, thats good. All my friends are cursed… thats bad. I don’t know, everything seems to be picking up and moving faster than it has before. Job hunting is going alright, it seems like I always have 30 leads at any given time, but no actual promises. I’m really happy for the few fellows who have received jobs though, it gives me hope.

Now I’m off to TRY AND GET WNBC to talk to me for a story. I’ve been calling all day, with no avail.
