I hope changing the title helps with some of the confusion. These are where these movies were FILMED not where they take place in the movie. 30 Days of Night was filmed in New Zealand, that is why there are trees in “Barrow.” In the actual city of Barrow there are very few trees if any at all.

This afternoon I decided to totally waste my life and create a map of the actual filming locations of movies about Alaska. It is a map of where films that all take part (or have large chunks) in the great state of Alaska. This all came up when my coworker Jane walked up to me and asked “Is Sitka as beautiful as it was in the movie The Proposal?” To which I could only reply… “That was filmed in Massachusetts.”

With an increased interest in the state generated by shows like Northern Exposure and Deadliest Catch, I decided to weed out most of the lies that the entertainment industry would want you to believe. I decided to try to mostly stay away from Discovery Channel shows (except for Deadliest Catch) just because those are more or less documentaries and it would be tough to fake actual things going on.

Some people are having trouble understand it, so I’ll try to explain it a little more clearly.

The titles listed are placed above the locations they were filmed, so…

Northern Exposure was shot in Washington

Baywatch: White Thunder at Glacier Bay was shot in Juneau and Glacier Bay

I don’t want people to think this was a completely original. I got the idea from Dan Meth’s series of pop culture charts. I also understand this may be incomplete, please leave updates in the comments and I’ll get to it when I feel so inclined.

I had such a blast in Alaska, I can hardly explain it in words. All the time I was able to spend with Shayna really cemented our relationship. Best part was when I met her mother (which I was nervous about) went really well. At first sight, she laughed because I look a lot like my animated self. I was able to see friends with fresh tattoos that were dedicated to Nick. As of right now I believe there are at least six of us with some nordic runes. I enjoyed the Midnight Sun in a way I had not appreciated before. Taking the time to go to the Midnight Sun Game, and take pictures with Shay and Jess in the amazing light that only 10pm can provide.

The photos spaced throughout this were all taken when we went for an adventure from a transfer station, to Alaskaland, and finally the Alaska Railroad yards off Well Street. They are the most artsy fartsy thing I’ve done in a long time. I’m a huge fan of odd angles and rack focuses… so take that entire art community, I can be creative too.

The odd thing about my trip was how easily I could fall back into old habbits. The most frequent question I was asked is, “I thought you were in New York?” To which my answer was always, “I’m still in New York.” It is just a natual feeling to ask someone if they have failed at leaving the state. Most people don’t make it on their first try. Granted I’m less than a year out, I don’t see any reason to move back as of now. (Pending I don’t get fired… out of a cannon… into the sun.) At the Third Eye Blind concert, I saw so many people from high school who are in the same place they were a year ago, or two years ago, or where they will be in five years. I’m not saying this is a bad thing or looking down on them for this reason, I just knew I wouldn’t go anywhere if I didn’t leave Fairbanks. This is not to say I didn’t see plenty of people who are making their lives better while in Alaska.

I was even able to patch up old friendships that had become strained, even before I left. Had a good afternoon in April and Dave’s apartment, just sitting around shooting the shit. Meeting Kathryn was good too. It helped bring me a little closer to Nick during the year since I left for the East Coast. Same thing with Nick H., Heather, Jane, Mallory, Dave, Ryan, Eric, and everybody else I’m forgetting at this exact moment.

If you have enjoyed the photos so far, there are many more located on my flickr. I bet there is a ton I’m forgetting, but I’ll leave it at that for right now. If you have any questions for me or anything, just ask, and I’ll probably talk you ears off. YES! Ask away, suckers, little do they know that I am working on a sort of sound weapon, but need plenty of ears to do preliminary tests on, I shall gather them by talking peoples ears off. Then I will descretely place them in my pocket and walk away… Did I type that all out… DAMN! Where is that delete ke

But I’m at work and looked up to find a video with former Alaskan Senator Mike Gravel and the Obama Girl in a Youtube video and needed to track it down. I love this guy because he is the candidate who doesn’t give a shit. He knows all to well his chances of winning the presidency and does and says whatever he feels right.
His last great youtube hit should have been titled, “Throwing rock into a lake.” GENIUS.
