My Temporary Month

Where did September go? I knew I had it right here, and now its gone. Oh well, one more for the ages. Everything for me has been temporary during this month though. I arrived here at 2 a.m. on the 1st (as per my deal with myself for my arrival date) and I’m going to be moving into my new apartment hopefully before the 1st of October. I will have bounced around 3 different apartments, my stuff is spread out over 3 states and a couple thousand miles and I have no money.
October will be my solid month. I will be in my apartment. I will have a steady flow of money. A familiar work schedule. Hopefully a dental plan under my belt. On top of that, some friends are coming down from Alaska for a conference, so I’ll be a lot less stressed than I am now.

Hopefully working all the time won’t take away my ability to blog about my own life as much, I know how much the 4 people who read this yesterday would be disappointed.

Slightly Less Homeless

So as of tonight, I actually have a place to call home in New York City. Yes, living the dream I know. I is on the west side of Harlem known as Sugar Hill. So if any of my friends can do the entire food verse to “Rappers Delight,” you will win a free, “I’m with Nick” t-shirt.
My new roommates will both be females, Becca and Brooke. I got to know Brooke over the summer in the IRTS program and Becca is her bff, so things should work out well. Unfortunately we have an October 1st move in date, so I’m still couch surfing at the moment. The current couch isn’t one at all, its a nice bed with the lovely Kathy. She is the IRTS coordinator and is letting me stay in the Bowen Suite. We are currently discussing building bunks in her living room to rent out as a hostle to former fellows who decide to make the plunge into the city.

In other news, I’m really enjoying a whole bunch of documentaries at the moment. The BBC’s “Seven Ages of Rock” series is well done, with each episode taking a look at a movement and narrowing it down to the few bands that really mattered. It is also raising questions in my head like, “Does England have East Coast/West Coast battles” Who would win that thing? Babyshambles vs. Franz Ferdinand? GO reason WWI started!
Other Docs that I’m currently into are, “The King of Kong” and “The Fog of War” which chronicles Robert Mcnamera’s journey from the CEO of Ford Motor Company to the Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War.

Run DMC Is Outside My Window…

…as far as I can tell. I am currently subletting on West 127th St, in you guessed it Harlem. Now, I’m not one who is all about stereotypes, but the last time I was here was a choir trip in 2003 when we looked outside the window we saw black people playing basketball. I have come a long way since then, and when I walk around, very few people at all are playing basketball at all.

Apartment hunting has gone alright. We looked at a place off of W 146th, which is a little farther up, but is close to 2 different subway stops and is really affordable. Finding a place in this city is crazy, once you actually might like something, you have to be able to go with it or risk loosing it. Only problem with the one we looked at on Tuesday is… its not completed yet. We weren’t able to take a look at an actual finished apartment. So the decision is tough, go on faith that it will be finished by the 15th so I can have a place to live, or let it go and try to find something else.

On another note, American Gladiators is AMAZING. I feel I was to young when it was really popular to actually enjoy the program. Why couldn’t I change my name to Blaze when I was a kid? That would make me memorable to give a job to, right?
