My favorite band that I have to explain to my friends every time I say I saw them live. My editor last summer Jessica was very adamant about how great they were. And she was right, I enjoyed their blend of high energy madness then the Fiery Furnaces could ever be. Sunday’s show was held in the McCarren Park Pool, a venue created out of an old public swimming pool. The bottom was once covered in a green tile, which has been stripped to reveal the concrete beneath. The show itself featured three bands, being Illinois, some other band I didn’t like, and Man Man. Their set began with a bang and didn’t stop. So much time and effort was put into making sure every pot hit and kazoo honk were right on time. I really enjoy a band which at one point can be thought of as noise and on the other hand can sound like rocking-fuck you-jump up and downness.

Check out the CMJ coverage, I saw Jason running around up front, and he is way better at this than I am.

Damn Battlefield Earth, it is such a terrible movie. But it’s one redeeming quality is that Mike Nelson (of MST3K fame) can totally rip it to shreds. His latest project is Rifftrax, where you download an mp3 for a few bucks and rent the movie and then play the two at the same time. Think of Pink Floyd and The Wizard of Oz, only with slightly less flying monkeys involved.

I had a few pictures that I was going to include with this post, but I think I’ll save them up for a full album on facebook. Oh, and I’m not all that big a fan of the Honesty Box on facebook. I’ve gotten a few notes that reveal things about me I don’t like. Why would somebody use that application to tell me something honest? I only use it to send notes to friends that they may or may not know are from me… i.e. “I know your secret, and pandas can cry on the inside too.” You know, those sort of honest notes.

But here is one picture I am really proud of that I didn’t have any hand in creating. Shayna did a portrait of me at the last min for one of her art classes. It has been up as my myspace pic for the past few weeks, but she touched it up and added a big thing of my tattoo as the background. Check out some of her other work here.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_et4XJqkGJkY/RniGWkursLI/AAAAAAAAADY/nM6bOKgcGt8/s400/Nick_by_Shay_Shay.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5077956302234955954" />

Work has been getting better and better. I’m loving the challenge of showing up at some random place in the city and having to become sort of a makeshift expert on the topic. On Monday I ended up in front of a CVS with Senator Schumer talking about pharmacies selling their client lists to places like Target. And today I went to Brooklyn twice, first time to do a story on a few houses that may have been a part of the Underground Railroad, and a second when I went to a press conference about the widow of Sean Bell talking about a new NYPD rule. Everybody who is holding the press conference becomes your best friend and is uber willing to give you information on what you are doing a story on.

And on the IRTS front, today we got to go to a “new media” panel at Fuse TV. Overall I think I got a lot out of it. Hell, it made me come straight home and blog about the experience. Everyone had a lot of great things to say, and gave everybody a lot of good ideas on how to try and start their careers. Most of the people on the panel didn’t start out in entertainment, but all of them ended up pretty high in these companies.

I’ve been able to go out and see so many great places in this city and it’s only been 5 days. On Thursday, I walked into the office and immediately found out I was going to be heading to Brooklyn and get to ride on a boat. A historic landmark committee named the Brooklyn Waterfront on one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America. So first there was a press conference, then off to the boat where we got to view all the things they were talking about. And on the way back we got to see a bunch of fire boats shooting red, white, and blue water into the air for flag day.

Yesterday my work load went from one story a day to helping out on three stories. I got to go to Central Park and talk to the DOT commissioner for NYC. They are handing out bike helmets to whoever wants one. Then off to a meeting on Mayor Bloomberg’s plan, unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the meeting before all the important people left. Then back to the office where I got to go back out and talk to people getting passports at the last min.
Oh!!! Also on Thursday I helped show the lead singer of The Apples In Stereo where the bathroom was. He just showed up out of nowhere and I had to ask a co-worker if it was actually him.
Other than that I wanted to let anybody who didn’t already know that The White Stripes are going to be in Anchorage in September… make your travel plans now.

-Peace!
