Santacon 2009 – Robot Santa Progress Edition

As promised, here is a composite of the sketches I had for the building of the robot. I more or less sat down and thought about what I had, and what I would need. I’m surprised by how close the finished product came to the first sketches. I started on November 5th. and finished the main construction about a week before Santacon.

Santacon 2009: Tabloid Prodigy

And so it begins! After a quick google search, I found I had made it onto Tabloid Prodigy. I want to say this is the first (and only) time in print I’ve ever been described as “doable.”

I still can’t get over how much of a positive response I got from the whole day. I love Santacon, everybody is great, from those only wearing a hat, to our Jewish brothers who come out and celebrate as well. It was awesome, and much like I said last year, I’ve got about 11 months to think of something to top this… and I don’t think it is going to be that easy.

Santacon 2009 – GIGANTIC ROBOT EDITION

I’m back! Yes, long time no see! Shayna (and buddy Jess) have moved to the city and doing nothing but having a blast! This weekend was Santacon. Year number 3 and I decided to go all out.

Saturday, December 12th 2009 was one of the best days of my life! After a month’s worth of work and more money than I would care to discuss here, everything came together… at 10am. This is just a teaser, but 2 things have come true, I have a youtube video OF me, not BY me. And after dreaming for 4 years… I made it onto Gothamist.

NYC Santacon 2008

I’m not quite sure why I decided to wait so long to make this post. At first I was going to have a Santa EXTRAVAGANZA, but now I believe just a low-key outing will suffice. I was joined over the course of the afternoon by both my roommates, Brooke and Lance and our friend Mallory.

This is my second year doing SantaCon. And as you might expect… I HAD A BLAST. Overall it was far more disorganized than last year, but the crowds were much larger. Where does one draw the line between confusion and chaos? For me, that moment came when eating in a deli along the trail and a girl started having seizures and needed to go to the hospital. Nothing like watching an EMT work towards the back of the store looking for a girl in red and white lying on the floor surrounded by several Santas.

I started out the day on very little sleep and the hope that I would be plastered by noon… this did not happen, and I don’t apologize to anyone for not drinking throughout the day. The last thing my system needed was alcohol after our FNR “holiday” party the night before. (To be fair, I didn’t drink a super amount there either)

SANTACON 2008

I can’t believe it is almost that time of year again, Santacon 2008 is Saturday December 13th. Brooke and I went last year and had a blast before I got sick. This year I think a little more conditioning before the event should clear everything up. Check out when and where the event will be happening in YOUR area at Santarchy.

For just a taste of the mindset of Santacon, read the rules. Unfortunately I think it would be a little difficult to cover as a journalist.

Santa looks like Santa. Holiday apparel is mandatory. A Santa hat is not enough. Get a Santa suit. Buy a Santa suit. Make a Santa suit. Steal a Santa suit. Get creative: be a Secret Santa, a Santasaurus, Candy-cane, a Reindeer, a Chanukah Chicken, a goddamn latke. Just don’t wear your fucking jeans.
Santa acts like Santa. Be jolly. Belly-laugh. Let people sit on your lap. Give out gifts.
Santa doesn’t talk to the press. “Ho-ho-ho” is good. “Publicity ho” is lame.
Santa doesn’t get arrested. Please remember the FOUR FUCKS:
1. Don’t fuck with kids.
2. Don’t fuck with cops.
3. Don’t fuck with security.
4. Don’t fuck with Santa. (yeah, it’s okay to fuck Santa)
